안녕하세요, 저는 이번 여름 동안 (2024년 6~8월) 제주다크투어에서 인턴으로 일하게 된 김현정입니다. 저는 한국 사람임에도 불구하고 미국이라는 타지에서 이방인으로 10년 넘게 살면서 한국을 더 관심 있게 바라보게 되었고, 석사과정에서 한국학을 공부하며 한국이 가진 사회 정치적 문제들에 학문적으로 접근하는 법을 배웠습니다. 실제로 이제는 한국의 위안부 문제나 군사 독재 정부, 민주화운동 등은 미국인들도 많이 알고 있을 만큼 학계에서도 활발히 거론 되는 실정입니다. 하지만 제주4·3 사건은 여전히 학문적 자료가 많이 부족하고 미국에서는 자료를 찾기가 어렵다는 것을 발견하였고, 따라서 이번 여름방학을 이용해서 제주도에 오게 되었습니다.
개인적으로 제주도를 돌아다니다가 문득 4·3사건을 기반으로 그날을 돌아볼 수 있는 투어 같은 것이 있으면 좋지 않을까 생각이 들어서 검색을 해보니 제주다크투어의 존재를 알게 되었고, 바로 인턴으로 일할 수 있을지 문의를 드리게 된 것이 이번 인턴의 시작이었습니다.
일을 시작한 지 얼마 되지 않았지만 벌써 제주다크투어를 통해 혼자서는 접근하기 어려웠을 자료들과 기행에 참여할 수 있어서 행복합니다. 앞으로 남은 기간 동안 더욱 알차게 제주다크투어에 매진해서 제가 앞으로 나갈 과정의 초석을 단단히 다지도록 하겠습니다. 좋은 기회를 주셔서 감사합니다.
I am so happy that I can introduce myself as a new intern for this 2024 Summer for Jeju Dark Tours and its members. Although I am a native Korean, I could be more interested in Korean issues as I lived in the U.S. And I could deeply thought about Korean chronic issues such as comfort women issue, neoliberalism or gender issues, as I majored in Korean Studies in NYU as a MA student.
However, I found out that it was still rarely mentioned about Jeju 4.3 incident both the U.S. and Korean academic field rather than other famous Korean chronic issues. In order to cover this shortage of the material, I decided to go to Jeju island by myself.
When I looked around the island, I suddenly thought that it would be nice for everyone if there is a tour program based on the Jeju 4.3 incident. And Google led me to the Jeju Dark Tours website. I emailed right away whether I could work as an intern, and I am here, Jeju Dark Tours office, now.
Although this week is the first week for the internship, I can already access many good quality materials and tour programs thanks to Jeju Dark Tours that I can never know alone. I think that I am so lucky because I can be with Jeju Dark Tours from the outset. Based on this foundation stone, I will contribute to both the U.S. and Korean academic field in the near future.
