Bonggae-dong Dark Tour by Foot
Course Introduction
Bonggae-dong, where the Jeju 4-3 Peace Park is located, has numerous April 3rd sites, but they are not well known. Based on the report of the Bonggae-dong April 3rd site survey conducted by the Memorial Committee for the Jeju April 3rd Uprising and Massacre in 2022, we will walk the Bonggae-dong April 3rd Road.

Muhlwat hill sight | On January 17, 1949, state forces consisting of the military, police, and Korean Youth Corps entered Bonggae-ri, captured villagers hiding in huts, and massacred them. |
Chonangarum Sonambat | On January 10, 1949, a lynch mob consisting of the military, police, and Korean Youth Corps entered Bonggae-ri and massacred the residents they captured. |
Bonggae Church | The church bell from the founding of Hammyung Church, the predecessor of Bonggae Church, remains. |
Dongbo Private school site | A place where railroad police were stationed for about a month and harassed villagers. |
Bonggae Elementary School | A monument honoring Mrs. Ko, who donated the land for Dongbo Private school. |
South gate of Bonggae | After Bonggae-ri was razed to the ground on November 20, 1948, by the state forces, reconstruction began in the spring of 1949, including the construction of a massive fortress. |
Hammyung Church Old Site | In March 1949, Bongae-ri was rebuilt under the name of 'Hammyung-ri', The church built at this time was called Hammyung Church. |
Daykey High School | On February 4, 1949, some of the 2nd Regiment who took over the Eastern 8th were stationed at Bonga-oreum. |
