Mudeungyiwat
Site Overview
Mudeungyiwat is one of the villages devastated during the April 3rd Uprising and massacre. Around 100 residents of the village were tragically killed by a punitive expedition on November 21st, 1948.
Mudeungyiwat, founded 300 years ago, was the largest village in the area. At the time of the April 3rd Uprising and massacre, approximately 130 households, totaling 400 residents, lived in Mudeungyiwat.
Mudeungyiwat has been incorporated into the ‘Donggwang-ri 4.3 Road’ (4.3 massacre path), which was inaugurated on October 31st. Signboards have been placed at key locations, such as the village entrance and the first site of the massacre, to honor its history and the memory of its residents.
Jeju Dark Tours argues that the term “lost village” should be modified to “deprived village” because the villages were extinguished against the residents’ will.
