Doryeon 1-gu April 3rd Fortress
Site Overview
In Doryeon 1-gu, the site where the Public Hall and the suwoongyo building once stood was said to be the highest point in the area, so a defensive wall was built around it. According to the testimony of Yoo Seong-mun (born 1925, male), even the trees near the 4·3 Fortress were cut down to ensure there was nowhere to hide in the vicinity of the fortress. The April 3rd Fortress in Doryeon 1-gu was rectangular in shape and relatively small compared to those in other villages. It is said that the fortress wasn’t very large because few people wanted to live inside it.
It is said that when the Order to Forcibly Evacuate was issued in December 1948, they fled to the nearby villages of Samyang and Hwabuk, and then began building the fortress in late spring of 1949. The 4·3 Fortress in Doryeon 1-gu began at 1649 Doryeon 1-dong, extended westward for approximately 150 meters, then turned sharply southward and continued for about 200 meters. From there, it turned eastward at 1621 and extended for about 150 meters, then turned northward and continued for about 200 meters, finally ending at 1649.
The outer perimeter of the site where the current Jugong Apartment complex stands corresponds to the April 3rd Fortress.
